How To Best Secure Your Backpack And Your Belongings

Published by Manuel on

Raise your hand if an item in your backpack has ever been stolen.

I’m very positive that at least 70% of those that read that statement would raise up their hands. In my opinion, there are two main threats to the items in our bags.Someone trying to find the zippers of a backpack

The first threat is obvious and it is a threat from pickpockets. The second threat is a threat caused by damages of any kind to the items in our backpacks.

These threats can be of any kind which might include damages caused by water gaining access into your backpack or for one reason or the other fire gaining access into your backpack. Fire gaining access into a backpack happens ones in a while so I won’t dwell on it in this post.

What I would do is reveal to you some ways that you can use to prevent water from gaining access into your backpack as I see that as a more common problem that can occur more frequently than a fire incident.

It is no longer news that we now have professional pocket pickers and It is no coincidence that these people are called professionals. It’s like they have perfected the art of pickpocketing and have even created a career out of it.

O yes, they have really created a career out of it because you cannot be called a professional unless you started from a novice and worked your way up until you become a master.

Do we have to suffer on the career choice these people have chosen? No we don’t and I say it is time we do everything we can so these people won’t be able to have access into the items in our backpacks.

Some methods I am going to reveal to you on how to secure the items in your backpack might be basic to some people but to others, they would be an eye-opener. Some of it might be free while others might cost you some amount of money.

Whatever the case may be, I can assure you that you would pick something very helpful in this post because I am about to drop some serious knowledge.

Go For an Anti-Theft Backpack

There is an old saying that what you don’t know won’t hurt you. While a lot of people might believe that, I most certainly don’t because what you don’t know can hurt you real bad. I am not going to deviate to try to over explain this. I would just focus on the point I intend on making.

Have you ever watched the movie matrix when Cypher made the statement “ignorance is bliss”? If you have watched the movie I think you would understand what he meant. Can you guess why I brought up these two statements which are what you don’t know won’t hurt you and ignorance is bliss?

One of the best ways to secure a backpack that a lot of people are ignorant about which ends up hurting them is in making use of an anti-theft backpack. If something was stolen from my backpack while walking on the road and this happened 20 years ago I would understand but I cannot accept this happening in the times we now live in.

The designing of smart backpacks has taken the backpack to a whole nother level. Gone are supposed to be the days whereby your backpack can be easily opened. If you have not heard about smart backpacks click the link above to read more on it and also click here to know about its features.

A backpack with hidden zippers and compartments

If you click the first link you would notice that I talked about backpacks having their zips, pockets and compartments hidden. This is a unique feature of smart backpacks as it makes it difficult for anyone to easily gain access into your backpack. Even professional pickpockets would find it difficult gaining access into your bag.

A good example of a backpack like this is Kopack Anti-Theft Backpack. It has some really great anti-theft features that would make your mind be seriously at ease from anyone stealing items from your backpack when it is on your back. Another good example is Oscaurt Anti-Theft Backpack.

–>Click Here To Read The Detailed Review of Kopack Anti-Theft Backpack<–

These backpacks have some really good anti-theft features and are also pretty solid. One thing you have to be aware of is that not all smart backpacks are made to be anti-theft. Designs are different based on different needs so while some smart backpacks are anti-theft, others are not.

Packs with these awesome features have their zippers completely hidden and their pockets and compartments are also hidden making anyone second guess their actions of being eager to gain access into your backpack.

This is a great way to secure the items in your backpack and can definitely be of great benefit to you.

Keep Track of All Your Items

Now we are going to assume that someone has been able to gain access into your backpack. I am going to tell you how you can know if an item from your backpack is missing. The problem with this feature is that I have been able to see it in just one backpack and the last time I checked the production of the backpack had not yet been completed for distribution.

So what happens is that special sensors are present in the bag that is able to keep track of your items present in the bag. If any of your items that are supposed to be present in your bag is removed from the bag you would be notified by an app that would be installed in your phone.

For this to work you would need to mark your items with special identification stickers that come with the bag and you would have to identify the items in the app of the bag that would be installed in your phone. If an item is not present in the bag you would be notified by the app that an item is missing from your bag.

This can come in handy as you would be able to know when someone takes something from your backpack and also be able to quickly identify the item that is missing. I have written a thorough review of this backpack you can click the link below to check it out.

It is a bit pricey but if they are able to mass produce this it would be of huge help to a lot of people.

Get an Anti-Slash or Cut proof backpack

A new method that I have come across that people now use to gain access into backpacks is by cutting into the backpack. They no longer intend on bothering themselves with the hassle of going through the zip so what they do is that they use a sharp object and cut their way into the backpack.

Some of them might even cut the strap of the bag as it is on your back in order to steal your bag. This is very dangerous as very few backpacks are made to withstand this. If you are afraid of your backpack been cut open then you would need to get yourself a backpack that is slash proof or cut proof.

Such backpacks are made with materials that makes it very difficult for anyone to cut their way into your backpack. By making use of such a backpack you can be rest assured that the items in your backpack would not be accessed by anyone trying to cut their way into your backpack.

A very good example of such a backpack is Loctote Flak Sack. It is one tough backpack and I would write a thorough review on it. When I do I would be sure to link it to this page. Your backpack would be completely safe from any knife. I seriously doubt a Kasumi Damascus knife would be able to cut its way into this backpack.

Although I have not given it a try, what I do know is that nothing is impossible.

Instead Of Always Wearing, Try Holding Your Backpack

When is the easiest time for your backpack to be opened when you are with your backpack? It is normally when you are standing in one place. When you are in one particular position anyone trying to open your backpack would have a lot of time to easily open the zippers of your backpack and go through your items especially if the person is experienced.

What can you do on your part to avoid this? One thing you can do is to remove your backpack from your back and hold it with your hand especially when in a crowded place or in a bus.

If you are in a crowded place and you know that you are going to stand in a particular position for some time then my advice to you is to make sure you don’t leave your bag on your back.

Remove your backpack from your back and hold it with your hand. This is a very effective way to safeguard the items in your backpack. I have heard a lot of stories of pickpockets been able to gain access into various backpacks when passengers stand in a bus or in a train or during events or crowded places.

Do yourself a favor and don’t be a part of those people that are victims to this. All you have to do if you find yourself in a situation whereby you would stand still in a place is to remove your backpack from your back. Don’t give those pickpockets an opportunity for them to be able to easily gain access into your bag.

If anyone is to gain access into my backpack then they would just have to be creative and come up with ways that I don’t know about because that is the only way they would be able to gain access into my backpack.

Always be conscious, Always Be Alert

Do you know that there are times when I actually forget where I placed my backpack? It is crazy and it has happened to me several times. I have just been lucky that no one actually thought about opening my backpack during such a time.

There are a lot of people that have gotten items in bag stolen because they were not conscious of the place they placed their backpack.

There are some places we go to whereby we are not able to enter with our backpacks. Sometimes lockers are provided to put your bag into but other times they are not. You have to be conscious of the place you put your backpack because there might just be some people actually waiting for you to put your backpack down so they can have their way with it.

It is best to always be conscious of your surroundings and be alert to people around you so you can safeguard your backpack and the items in it.

Avoid Putting Expensive Items In Your Backpack

There are times whereby we would need to put expensive things in our backpacks. It is just unavoidable so for this rule I would say that it depends on the type of backpack you are making use of. I recently wrote a post on clear backpacks and one of the major disadvantages of a clear backpack is people been able to see what is inside your bag.An image of a clear backpack

You cannot make use of this type of backpack and expect people not to see your items in the bag. That is just crazy. Why would you be making use of this type of backpack and then you put an expensive item into it? It is like you are just telling the world that you dare them to come and steal your expensive item.

I don’t know how you look at it but that is how I see it. Whenever I am to make use of a clear bag I should know that since people are able to see through my backpack then they would be able to see the items in the bag be it cheap or expensive especially if the item is big.

It does not matter if it is a heavy-duty clear backpack because they would still be able to see through it and with a little calculation you can end up one item short by the end of the day or a worse scenario you end up losing more than just that one item.

So my advice to you is depending on the backpack you are making use of try to refrain from putting expensive items into the backpack. That is one sure way to safeguard your items from been stolen from your backpack because if your expensive item is not in the see-through backpack in the first place then how would it be stolen.

Just make sure you don’t go around telling people that you put expensive items in your backpack when it is not a clear backpack.

Install Trackers To Track Down Your Backpack

Has your backpack ever been snatched from you? I have never experienced this and hope that I don’t but for those that have experienced it, I am pretty sure that it was not a good experience. Sometimes our backpacks might be really expensive or we might have some really important documents inside.

Some people have even been kidnapped with their backpacks. There is a way that you can use to locate your backpack and that is to install GPS trackers into the backpack.

Now I am not saying you should go all Liam Neeson and try to locate your backpack like he located his daughter in the movie “taken”. I am just giving this to you as an option as some of us might have some really important items in our packs.

GPS trackers can be installed in a backpack which can make the backpack to be tracked 24/7. This is a good way to keep track of your backpack in case it gets stolen. If your backpack gets stolen there is a good chance that it might be disposed of after the item in it has been taken but just in case you decide to get your backpack back you can make use of the tracker to locate your bag.

There might still be some items that might still be very important in the bag that would be ignored because they don’t know its importance.

Please note that if you are trying to locate your backpack you need to locate it with several persons. Never locate it alone as the person/persons that took it might be harmful.

Important Note: This post should not be used in any way as a means in justifying your actions in putting tracking devices in various items or trying to track down an item using a GPS tracker. You should always make use of your own discretion to know if it is safe to track a missing item or person due to safety reasons.

A good tracking device that I have come to find out about that can be used to track down a backpack is a GPS tracker produced by landair. To check it out just type this name into Amazon’s search bar “Landairsea 54 GPS tracker”.

Make Use Of A Padlock On Your Backpack

This is a method most people with backpacks must have made use of at one point or the other. It is not always efficient as I feel some padlocks can be picked but it is just an additional layer of security for the items in your backpack.

You can safeguard the items in your backpack by making use of a padlock on the zip of your backpack to make it difficult for anyone to open the backpack.

Depending on the experience of a pickpocket a padlock might not be able to stop them from getting access into your backpack but there are still a lot of pickpockets out there that don’t know how to open a bag whereby a padlock was used to secure its zip.

You can get a very secure padlock that would make it very difficult before anyone can be able to open it. A perfectly good example of this is Stanley hardware S828-152 CD8820 padlock. Copy that name and place it into Amazon’s search bar to locate it.

Some backpacks even come with security coded lock that can be used to lock the zip of the backpack. That is really amazing.

Avoid Moving At Night

I don’t need to go much into this because this is something we all know. Crime rates on an individual are usually high at night whereby no one is able to come to your rescue. A weapon can be easily pointed at you at night to remove or open your backpack.

To avoid this from happening to you my advice would be that you try to limit your night movements when making use of your backpack. But please if someone points a weapon at you whether it is during the day or night and ask you to open your backpack please do not disobey the person. It is better to have your item stolen than to lose your life.

Stopping Water From Getting Into Your Backpack

Like I mentioned at the beginning of this post I said pickpockets are not only what you need to protect your items in your backpack from. If your bag is not well-secured water which in this case is rainfall can find its way into the backpack and can end up damaging the items in the backpack.

One of the best ways against this is to get a backpack that is waterproof or water resistant. This can go a long way in protecting the items in your backpack from getting wet.Picture of a backpack withstanding water

I recently wrote a post on how to make your backpack outlive its lifespan and this was among one of the methods. Some backpacks produced are not water-resistant or waterproof and this can cost you a lot if you end up getting drenched by rain.

This can make the items in your bag become wet and a worst-case scenario it can even lead to your backpack becoming soaked with water which can reduce the lifespan of the backpack.

There are some backpacks that are produced that might be water-resistant but not waterproof. Even if a backpack is water-resistant it might not be able to withstand water from getting into your bag when there are extreme rainfalls.

A way around this is making use of rain covers for your backpack. Some backpacks actually come with rain covers and a good example of such a backpack is Kopack Anti-Theft Backpack. It comes with a rain cover in one of its hidden pockets that can be used to cover the backpack whenever there is rainfall.

This ends up making the backpack waterproof thereby not allowing a single drop of water into the backpack. Pretty sweet right?

Conclusion

This was a pretty long post and although I might not have covered every possible way that you can use to make your items in your backpack secure, I hope I have been able to cover enough that would be of huge help to you. Keeping our items in our bags safe is now a must with everything happening around us.

We are no longer ignorant of the methods been used to steal items in backpacks and are therefore now prepared to fight back securing our packs in every possible way to give offenders no room for access into our bags. Just a recap, some ways that we can use to protect our bags and the items in them are…

  • Go for anti-theft backpacks
  • Keep track of your items
  • Go for an anti-slash or cut proof backpack
  • Try and sometimes hold your backpack with your hand instead of wearing it
  • Always be conscious and alert
  • Try avoid putting expensive items in your backpack if you know it would be vulnerable
  • Install a gps tracker in your backpack
  • Make use of a padlock
  • Avoid moving at night
  • Make use of a water-resistant or waterproof backpack

I would like to know if you have tried any of these methods and have they actually kept your items safe. Please leave your comments below and I would reply to them whether they be questions or just personal opinions.

It’s interesting how you mentioned that it is not acceptable for theft on backpacks in the current times we live in with all the technologically safe backpacks that are now existing in today’s society. Trying to protect items in the backpack is not always easy. Thank you to the men providing resources on smart backpacks and also to you as well

Thanks for your comment Andrew. Protecting the items in a backpack is definitely not an easy task but bags are now been produced that should make this fairly easier

Mike · March 7, 2019 at 7:15 am

I noted your comments on a transparent backpack – can’t believe anyone would travel with one of those. Just asking for trouble!!  I’m about to travel again and have previously had stuff stolen – one pick pocket , one by cutting.  I like your suggestion of holding on to the backpack rather than wearing to lessen the chances of pick pocketing but how effective are the slash proof bags?  I like the idea of using a GPS tag but only for alerting the authorities otherwise you could just buy trouble.  What do you think about labeling it as GPS tracked?

    Manuel · March 7, 2019 at 7:49 am

There are several backpacks that are anti-slash. One of my favorites is Loctote Flak Sack II. Making use of this bag makes it really difficult for offenders to gain access into your bag. Its anti-slash property is great and you can guarantee the safety of the items in your backpack especially when you go to places that are not just safe.

Labelling your backpack as GPS tracked is definitely a good idea but by doing so you might have just told the offender that there is GPS tracker in the bag and an experienced pickpocket would just find a way to remove the tracker from the bag so it can no longer be tracked.

I can really relate to this post because I’ve lost some of my valuables including my Samsung phone from pickpockets who unzipped my bag and got the phone out without my knowledge. Till today I can’t get the phone back although I stopped bothering myself some weeks ago and got a new device.

Talking about using a water-proof bag,  I also paid dearly for this when my laptop got damaged because moisture penetrated my bag and I never knew not until  3days later when I wanted to deliver a work to a client I realized that my laptop was damaged

Nowadays, I’m using a waterproof bag and I try as much as possible not to put my cell phone or any other valuables in my bag.

Anyways, I’ll try checking out some of the bags in your post, it’s high time I changed my bag to something more secure

    Manuel · March 7, 2019 at 8:52 am

The items in our bags are always not safe from pickpockets and rain unless we secure it ourselves. I always encourage my readers to try and go for anti-theft backpacks as this would reduce any unwanted access into their backpacks.

Hi

After reading this with all the necessary information about securing backpacks and our belongings, I have a better understanding of this. I know that when we travel or do lots of field work, the backpack is always very helpful for us. Actually I also sometimes think that backpack is not sufficient for everything. But I now believe that if we choose the right backpack and use those tips to secure our backpack, it is can be really useful.

Louis · March 7, 2019 at 9:35 am

Theft and insecurity in my neighborhood is at a record high. Like you truly said, pickpockets don’t bother about keys or locks anymore, they just slash the bag and take the content.

In this case, an anti slash bag will come in handy, to prevent against such occurrences. To keep my bag safe, in high density environment, I either carry my bag by the side or on front. Admittedly, this isn’t convenient but it saves me the stress of having to report and replace stolen items

    Manuel · March 7, 2019 at 5:24 pm

Anti-theft bags can really come in handy in situations like those you described. A very secure anti-theft bag I recently came across that I think would be really useful is Loctote Flak Sack II.
